The PROMinator is a low-cost Flash-based replacement for an embedded system using an EPROM. Especially desireable for automotive on-board diagnostics (OBD) systems, the PROMinator eliminates the need for costly and very time-consuming EPROM programmers and
erasers needed to modify engine calibration parameters. It also eliminates the need to keep endless piles of EPROMs handy.
The PROMinator is NOT an emulator...it is a PERMANANT replacement for an
EPROM. Once programmed the data is permanently stored until
reprogrammed.
Features
Supports wide range of EPROM sizes:
The PROMinator is capable of replacing EPROMs ranging in density from 16K (2K x 8) up to 4M (512K x 8).
Supports multiple images:
The
PROMinator is capable of storing multiple data
images. The desired image may be selected by a
rotary DIP switch. The default configuration
will include the ability to store 8
different image files ranging in size from 2K
bytes up to 128K bytes. Custom
configurations other than default will of course
be avilable. The limit on image sizes will
be a minimum of 256 bytes and a maximum of 512K
bytes.
The rotary DIP switch may be connected to the
PROMinator board via a ribbon cable, or may be
mounted directly to the PROMinator board.
Three options are available for a remote rotary
DIP switch:
1- "Basic" panel-mountable rotary switch
assembly without display (see Fig. 3).
2- with blue display (RAD, see Fig. 4).
3- in
1.38"(35mm) x 2.13"(54.1mm) x 0.58"(14.7mm) black
plastic enclosure with blue display and dimmer switch
(RAD-E, see Fig. 5).
Ease of use:
Included with PROMinator is a very simple Windows application for "downloading" an image to the PROMinator. Simply connect the parallel port of a PC to the PROMinator, open a binary image file (.BIN extension) and click the program button. A few short seconds later your PROMinator is ready for action (download time will of course depend on the image size, but will always be MUCH faster than an equivalent EPROM). The PROMinator software will automatically verify the contents of the image that was downloaded WITHOUT the need for a bi-directional parallel port.
Prominator software may be downloaded here.
Small Size:
The PROMinator's overall
dimensions
measure 2.92" x 1.6". This allows it to
fit INSIDE GM C3 as well as P4 ECMs. (Note: for compatibility with MEMCAL equipped
ECMs a MEMCAL adapter will be required. See Fig. 6)
The
parallel port connector is accessable via the
ECM's EPROM cover plate. A ribbon cable
may be extended from the PROMinator board inside
the ECM to a convient location inside the
vehicle for easy access via a laptop PC.
This allows the ECM to remain in it's factory
location, yet remain accessible for
programming.
Real-time
"On-The-Fly" programming:
The
"Pro" version of the PROMinator will have the ability to
re-program the data contents "on-the-fly". System
operation will not be interrupted during programming of the flash
ROM. PROMinator will also be avilable in a "standard"
version. With the standard version data communications between the
target system (ECM microprocessor for example) and the PROMinator's flash
ROM will be interrupted during programming.. In the case of an
automotive OBD system this means that the ECM will go into
"limp-home" mode during programming (approximately 2 seconds for
a 4K data image), and will automatically recover with the new ROM contents
upon successful programming of the PROMinator's flash ROM.
